Year 6 Responsibilities
All of our year six children have a responsibility or job that contributes towards the running of the school, enhancing our school community. All roles are equal and this is the fundamental value that underpins what they do. Each post holder has a detailed job description and applies for their job in September.
Here is a short summary of what each post holder does:
Health, Safety and Environment Officers - We carry out termly health and safety monitoring visits across the school. We report back to the senior leadership team and attend governing body meetings to discuss our findings. We are also responsible for enhancing the school’s recycling and environmental projects across the school.
Digital Leaders - We are responsible for helping to ensure that all computing equipment is stored securely and is kept tidy. We are also ambassadors for online safety across the school, helping to educate others on how to be a safe and responsible online citizen.
House Captains - We are responsible for ensuring that house points are counted every week and awards shared fairly. We promote and lead 'team spirit' during celebration assemblies and special events such as sports day.
Learning Mentors - We support the learning of younger children. We help and encourage the children and help them to feel more confident as independent learners and help them to celebrate their successes. We also listen to younger children read on a weekly basis. We go over to the infants and read with the year two children. Sometimes, we bring them to our library too. We are helping their teachers to teach them to read.
Sports Leaders – We support the younger children with their playtimes. We go over to the infant school at lunchtimes. We set up playtime games and encourage the children to play fairly, have fun with their peers whilst staying healthy too! We are also responsible for ensuring all the sports equipment is ready for PE lessons and after school clubs.
Librarians – We support Mrs Handley in the library. We help her keep the library a peaceful reading environment. We also make sure that all the books are returned and placed on the shelves following our categorising system. We also help the younger children change their books.
Office Assistants – We support the office staff in our school with daily jobs. This may include collecting and delivering letters, photocopying and helping with whole school projects. For example, packing harvest festival goods and other charity initiatives (Children in Need, Cry in the Dark Shoebox Appeal etc).
Site Managers – We help Mrs Dyson and Mr Beastall keep our school grounds tidy. We do frequent litter picks and other jobs such as: sweeping up leaves, looking after the plants in the polytunnel, helping to set up for assemblies and parent workshops and we keep an eye on the school’s electricity and water usage!
