Continue with Learn to Swim lessons

Access and actively deliver and support through a ‘learn to swim’ programme. Longer sessions, more qualified staff. Longer swimming courses ensure swimming is accessible for all.

Main focus has been primarily on Year 4 because the benefits of swimming started in this year group can highlight any potential non-swimmers who need extra swimming input at a later stage.

Hiring of specialist PE teacher.

As a school we are looking to upskill and give confidence back to teachers who are delivering PE and Games lessons, to ensure the statutory 2hrs per week is being upheld and is taught to a high level of competency. Thus ultimately providing good to outstanding lessons each time.

We are recruiting an outside PE specialist to come in to school for 2 days each week to work alongside our teachers within PE and Games lessons. This support/team teaching will be focussed coaching and will hone teachers’ skills. This will also improve lesson planning delivery and commitment to PE and Games lessons.

PE Primary Teacher planning resources

Alongside recruiting a specialist teacher we will be putting in place a scheme of planning materials and resources to support teachers and planners of PE in delivering good quality lessons. This will ultimately give teachers confidence in all aspects of the curriculum by providing newly planned lessons to update PE teaching. The overall aim is the delivery of consistently good or outstanding lessons across the school.

Coaching experts for extra- curricular and lunchtime clubs.

Willesborough Junior school strongly believes that every child should have access to sporting opportunities be that for pure enjoyment, health benefits or individual or team pursuits. This additional coaching and leading of a wide range of sporting clubs this will enable all children to participate in new sporting/team work experiences thus creating a love for sport and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

As well as giving the opportunity for all children to access sport outside of the curriculum, these coaches’ expertise will also be utilised by running specific clubs linked into our competitive games calendar for those children who excel in sport in general. Through practice and participation in these additional clubs they will be able to represent Willesborough Junior School in competitions across the Ashford schools community to a high level.

One of our main aims at WJS is to continue the Olympic legacy and promote British values throughout the school. A key way of achieving this is to have a Paralympic athlete in for the day. This will show all children that anything is achievable and to aim high. Furthermore, this experience will instil the values of tolerance, perseverance and dedication being delivered by a role model.  We are hoping that this special event will also raise the profile of sport in WJS and encourage a wider range of children to take part in new sporting activities and strive to improve their skills and level of competition by being inspired by what they see can be achieved.
