Book Battle

What is Book Battle?

Each week, every class in each year group will “battle” to be the class with the highest number of readers who have completed at least their 4 x 20 minute reads.  The winning class will be presented with a Book Battle trophy in assembly and be rewarded with an extra play.

How will my child’s teacher know that my child has read?

Each read at home should be recorded in your child’s reading record book.  Your child can write what they’ve read or you can but it must be signed by an adult.  The reading record book should go to school every day with your child.

How can I help my child become a better reader?

VIPERS are the reading skills that your child needs.  If your child has read independently or read to you, ask them some VIPER questions about what they have read. E.g.

V: Which words tell you that….?

I: How can you tell that….?

P: What will happen next…?

E: Why is the text arranged in this way?

R: What happened to…?

S: Can you summarise what happened?

How often should my child read at home?

Your child needs to read at least 4 times a week for 20 minutes.

Why do they need to read so much?

It is a fact that children who read more, make better learners.  It helps them in so many areas including communication skills, maths, self-esteem and empathy skills, to name a few! Scientists have discovered that reading really does increase the brain’s white matter and cognitive ability, so it is so important for your child’s education.
